22 Study Goals I’m Making For The New Year

This post is long overdue for no other reason than that I’m a lazy blogger. Sometimes I feel like posting and sometimes I don’t; and that’s okay. These past few weeks have been really slow for me as I come to realize that winter break truly is over. The transition between 2017 and 2018 wasn’t all that special and I often forget we’re in a New Year. I mean, I know it’s January; but I forget it’s 2018 and still write the date as 2017. Since it is a new year I thought I might as well jump on the fast-moving bandwagon and present my ‘new year, new me’ goals.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what my goals for the New Year would be. I’m not a big fan of making New Year’s resolutions because I can never stick to them; and I’ve tried. That’s why I tend to make smaller, monthly goals; they are way more manageable. Well with that said, a few weeks ago I started my final semester of high school and I already feel like I’m coming down with a case of senioritis. Just kidding, partially. In actuality I’m very excited to finish the school year off strong and need to set some goals to help me accomplish that.

Since I’m not only finishing high school, but also going to college this year; I want to set goals that will grow with my education. I am not giving myself a time limit to any of these goals because I want my growth to be organic and these goals to become permanent additions to my study routine.

2018 Study Goals

Note taking goals

  • Take more, and better, in-class notes
  • Re-write notes as soon as possible for review
  • Don’t get caught up in all the pretty notes

Time management goals

  • Make better use of a timer for concentration
  • Finish assignments more than a day before they are due
  • Give yourself enough time to do the assigned reading
  • Don’t cram all the time
  • Try the Pomodoro method

Study session goals

  • Start annotating books
  • Try using flashcards to study
  • Highlight short phrases, not paragraphs
  • Study with other people

Planning goals

  • Start studying for an exam two weeks in advanced
  • Change the scenery, go to a coffee shop or something
  • Take a break every once and a while
  • If you’re gonna cram, cram well
  • Create a personal study system

General study goals

  • Ask for help more
  • Pray more; stress less
  • Always give your best
  • Know when to stop studying
  • Be proud of where you are
I would like to take a moment to talk about my last goal. Sometimes it is hard for me to see the progress I’ve made when it comes to studying. Of course there are the immediate benefits of studying, such as better grades, but there are plenty of times where the grade doesn’t match the amount of time I’ve invested. This year I will be proud of how far my study skills have improved, regardless of the grades I make.

Let’s chat, have you set study goals for the year? I would love to hear them and add them to the list. If you want, pick some goals from the list and we can work on them together! Always remember to start where you are and take baby steps. You’ll go further than you ever imagined if you focus on the quality of your studies rather than the quantity.
